UKERC reports to a Funders Group convened by the Research Councils, and is advised by an independent Advisory Board.

Funders Group

A new Funders Group was formed in 2014. The Group comprises of representatives from the three research councils that fund the Centre: the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board provides high-level advice to UKERC on:

  • The strategic direction of the Centre, including its interaction with Government and the Research Councils and its role respective to other UK energy initiatives
  • Its collaboration, communications, and outreach strategies, including liaison with the business sector and policymakers
  • Its networking and co-ordination activities nationally and internationally
  • The Centre's research programme

UKERC's Advisory Board meets at least twice a year.

Research Committee

The Research Committee meets at least twice a year and is responsible for overseeing the allocation of £3.6 million funding to research via a flexible Research Fund. It operates formally as a sub-committee of the UKERC Advisory Board. The main tasks of the committee include:  

  • Helping to specify the annual calls for research project proposals planned for 2015, 2016 and 2017
  • Overseeing the peer review process for research project proposals
  • Making recommendations about those that should be funded
  • Assessing the fit of recommended proposals with UKERC’s research programme
  • Advising the Research Director on the implementation of UKERC’s Research Strategy

Membership: Professor Gordon MacKerron (chair), Professor Patrick Devine-Wright, Professor Dick Eiser, Professor Paul Fleming, Professor Alice Larkin, Professor Philip Mawby, Professor Patricia Thornley, Dr Dan Van Der Horst.

It will operate formally as a sub-committee of the UK Advisory Board, meeting at least twice a year, with more formal meetings in its early stages. The main tasks of the committee will include:  

  • Helping to specify the annual calls for research project proposals planned for 2015, 2016 and 2017;
  • Overseeing the peer review process for research project proposals;
  • Making recommendations about those that should be funded;
  • Assessing the fit of recommended proposals with UKERC’s research programme; and
  • Advising the Research Director on the implementation of UKERC’s Research Strategy.

Members were selected according to strict criteria including a distinguished track record of relevant research with an international repuation; demonstrated experience of, and understanding of, interdisciplinary research; knowledge and experience relevant to the energy sector; and the desire to have a balanced set of expertise wihtin the Committee.
