One possible route to developing the potential of hydrogen in decarbonising the offshore energy system is through the use of offshore renewable energy for conversion of electrical energy into hydrogen on existing oil and gas platforms, which is then stored or transported onshore via pipelines or cryogenically in ships.

The project aims to facilitate major expansion and improvement in collaboration between offshore industry sectors, government and the whole systems research community to bring much clearer strategic focus to development of the hydrogen economy and facilitate information sharing.

A key challenge will be to improve understanding of the opportunities to collaborate and to identify the technical, policy and governance barriers to optimising these systems and improving their economic viability. They will achieve this by arranging sector specific round table sessions, then a networking / workshop event to showcase key relevant research and demonstration projects.
