UKERC Welcomes UK Low Carbon Transition Plan

The UK Energy Research Centre welcomes the launch of the DECC UK Low Carbon Transition Plan. In a recent report UKERC demonstrated that the transition to a low carbon economy is both economically and technologically feasible. However, a number of non-technical barriers still need to be addressed to enable this transition.

The report "UKERC Energy 2050: Making the transition to a secure and low carbon energy system", released 30th April 2009, showed that there are several possible pathways to a low carbon economy. "Whatever path we choose will require concerted efforts by government and other stakeholders. The Low Carbon Transition Plan has grasped the size of the challenge and introduced a new level of accountability within government" said Professor Jim Skea, UKERC Research Director. 

"The UK Energy Research Centre welcomes this attempt to articulate a comprehensive and integrated approach to facilitate the transition to a low carbon economy. This new package seems to have more of a whole system view, and recognises the importance of both the development and the deployment of new technologies", said John Loughhead UKERC Executive Director
