What is a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT)?
An exciting and prestigious environments offering postgraduate study to safeguard the flow of highly qualified people into careers in research or industry.
Through a combination of taught modules, professional development and research, students not only develop a breadth of knowledge in their chosen field but also an understanding of where their research sits within the energy landscape and how it relates to other areas. CDT students receive professional skills training in areas such as project management and enterprise. They also have the opportunity to spend time working in industry; this can be for up to 75% of their time if they are enrolled at one of the Engineering or Industrial Doctorate Centres. Furthermore, students undertake public engagement activities as part of their training. This not only strengthens their communication skills but also helps to develop the teamwork, creativity and leadership skills needed to take up senior roles in academia or industry.
Types of CDT in the Network are:
Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT)
- A 4-year PhD course includes research projects and up to 25% of time spent on taught coursework
- Taught programme develops technical interdisciplinary knowledge and broaden skills
- First year allows time for exploration before deciding on a challenging and original research project at PhD level
- Other activities to develop breadth of knowledge plus transferable skills training including public engagement

Wind Energy Systems Doctoral Training Centre
Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Centre and Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC)
- For students who want a career in industry
- A 4-year programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught courses
- PhD-level research projects are jointly supervised by the university and a company
- Around 75% of students’ time is spent working within the company
- IDC Students undertake technical and management training, assessed as part of the degree, to help their professional development
