The Engineering Doctorate Centre in Nuclear Engineering
The EngD consortium is led by the Dalton Institute at The University of Manchester in partnership with Imperial College London and supported by the universities of Birmingham, Lancaster, Leeds, Sheffield, Strathclyde and Surrey. This makes a radical departure from conventional postgraduate studies. On this course, Research Engineers will spend over 75% of their time onsite at their sponsoring company. It means projects will be both collaborative and innovative and focused on nuclear competence and expertise. It will ensure that Research Engineers will be at home both in the laboratory and the boardroom. Above all it will provide time that is commercially relevant to the student and commercially effective to the sponsoring company.
Research themes include:
- Reactor Technology
- Waste Management
- Decommissioning
- Materials
- Socio-economic aspects
A typical project will cover the following issues: • a challenging industrial issue of high technical merit requiring multi-disciplinary collaboration • a study of the relationship of the work to corporate strategy and its environmental impact • project management and budget control, leadership and teamwork skills • professional development towards full membership of an appropriate professional body.
