EERA Project Development

Ten leading European Research Institutes have taken up the challenge to found an European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).

The key objective of the EERA is to accelerate the development of new energy technologies by conceiving and implementing Joint Research Programmes in support of the Strategic Energy Technology (SET) plan by pooling and integrating activities and resources, combining national and Community sources of funding and maximising complementarities and synergies.

Working groups have been formed to develop project plans in each of the following proposed Joint Programme areas.  Typically they have one participant from each interested country, normally from the relevant national laboratory, and are convened by the EERA Secretariat. Participation is not in principle limited to the founding members of EERA, although in practice they form the core.

Development of agreed Joint Programmes is proceeding at different rates, but initial proposals for six (Solar PV, Wind, Smart Grids, CCS (pre-combustion capture), Concentrated Solar Power, and Geothermal Energy) are at an advanced stage and are intended to be launched in Spring 2010.

Participation in the JPs must be at a “material” level, which is likely to be defined as five FTE researchers.  At present participation is funded through national means.  More information on the JPs generally can be found on the EERA website.
