10.10.07: UKERC Awarded £1m for More Studentships - seven new starts in 2007

UK Research Councils have awarded a further £1m to continue the UK Energy Research Centre's successful interdisciplinary studentship competition in 2007 and 2008.
The studentships are being paid for directly by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and administered through the Natural Environment Research Council, with UKERC running the selection process and engaging the successful candidates fully in its networks.
A further seven studentships have been awarded, enabling the successful applicants to carry out interdisciplinary energy PhDs over the next three years. These studentships successfully cross scientific, engineering and socio-economic boundaries and are in addition to the thirteen previously made in 2005 and 2006.
Professor Jim Skea, UKERC's Research Director, said: "The 2007 round of applications showed particular interest in carbon capture and storage, renewable energy and energy demand. Most contained at least some element of three broad scientific areas – engineering and physical science; environmental and biological sciences; and social science and economics. The successful applications will boost UKERC's reputation for whole systems, integrated energy research."
Studentships were awarded to:
-
Dougal Burnett, University of Edinburgh: Climate Change and Renewable Energy Portfolios
-
Chris Collins, Imperial College: Strategies and Policies for Building Resilience into the Electricity Network
-
Dan Eager, University of Edinburgh: Modelling Generation Capacity Margin as a Dynamic Control Problem
-
Matthew Evans, University of Exeter: Uncertainty in Wave Energy Prediction: From Wave Analysis to Economic Viability
-
Rudra Kapila, University of Edinburgh: Sites, regulations and policies for CO2 capture and geological storage in India
-
Ellie Lindsay, University of Cumbria: Enhancing biodiversity within biofuel crops; economic impact on users and best practice
-
Jennifer Taylor, University of Nottingham: Urban Wind Turbines, Power vs. Nuisance
