20.11.07: UKERC Welcomes Government Report on Business Opportunities and Climate Change

The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) today welcomed the launch of the Government's Commission on Environmental Markets and Economic Performance (CEMEP) report, which sets out the steps needed to unlock the business opportunities that will arise from tackling climate change.

Professor Jim Skea, a member of the Commission and Research Director at UKERC, said: "The opportunities for UK business and employees are huge if a strong and credible policy framework can be put in place. The Commission's report points the way forward with recommendations on pricing carbon, creating lead markets for new technologies and stimulating innovation through R&D."

The report identifies the scale of the opportunities that are opening up, sets out guidelines for both environmental and innovation policy and highlights actions for business and employees. It recommends:

  • setting credible, long-term environmental goals consistent withinvestment cycles
  • rewarding innovation that furthers environmental goals through the Government's science and innovation policies
  • Government and business working together to improve training and professional development for supply chain managers

Jim Skea commented: "Business is ready to invest in environmental technologies as never before. If taken up, the recommendations in this report could result in a leading role for the UK in global environmental markets."
