UKERC Research Director Jim Skea elected member of the new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change bureau
The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) is pleased to announce that UKERC Research Director, Jim Skea, has been elected Vice-Chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). WG-III focuses on mitigation issues.
The IPCC is the world's leading scientific and technical body for the assessment of climate change. It was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to provide decision-makers and the general public with a clear and balanced view of the present state of understanding of climate change. IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore.
The new IPCC Bureau, of which Jim is a member, will lead the IPCC through the preparation of the Fifth Assessment Report, which is expected to be released in 2014.
Jim Skea said: "I am both delighted and excited to play this role within IPCC. As we approach a post-Kyoto deal on climate change, mitigation issues will be coming to the fore. WG-III activities will complement UKERC very effectively. I hope to see other members of UKERC and the wider UK energy research community actively participating role in the preparation of the Fifth Assessment Report."
