UKERC Research Committee: Call for Applications
The UK Energy Research Centre has recently been awarded funding for a second phase of activity from May 2009 – April 2014.
UKERC is the focal point for UK research on sustainable energy. It takes an independent, whole-systems approach, drawing on engineering, economics and the physical, environmental and social sciences.
The Centre's role is to promote cohesion within the overall UK energy research effort. It acts as a bridge between the UK energy research community and the wider world, including business, policymakers and the international energy research community and is the centrepiece of the Research Councils Energy Programme.
In Phase II, roughly 40% of the Centre's research activity will be supported through a Research Fund which will bring a wider range of individuals and institutions into the Programme.
One of the main tasks of the Research Committee will be to specify the annual call for proposals and assess the fit of recommended proposals with UKERC's overall Research Programme.
To do so, it will need to provide advice to UKERC management on overall research strategy and monitor the overall progress of UKERC's research programme. The Committee will meet at least twice a year, almost certainly more frequently in its early stages.
Membership of the Committee will provide a unique perspective on the UK energy research landscape. UKERC is now inviting applications from the UK science community to sit on the committee. "Science" is meant in the widest possible sense, covering: physical science; biological science, environmental science; engineering; social science; and economics. Up to seven members will be appointed.
The criteria against which applications will be judged will include: a distinguished scientific record with an established international reputation; demonstrated experience of and empathy with interdisciplinary research approaches; knowledge and experience relevant to the energy sector; and match against areas of expertise required to constitute a balanced membership.
Closing date: Applications must be sent to Angela Knight by 5pm, 20th April 2009
